WGC Mexico Championship

GettyImages-942783762The PGA Tour has clearly spent too long in the US, so this week it travels south of the border, for the WGC Mexico Championship. An event which brings back found memories, after backing Phil ‘The Thrill’ Mickelson to win, back in 2018. Now besides the golf, this event is one of my favourites because of one aspect, and that is the first tee announcer. The Mexican flavour he brings to the introductions is incredible. Whilst Club de Golf Chapultepec measures over 7,300 yards, the fact that it sits 7,800 feet above sea level negates any issues, or advantages when it comes to driving distance. Driving accuracy has also been largely irrelevant in recent years. We also have to take into account the smaller (72 man) field.

Patrick Reed

Yep, good old Mr Reed again. Whilst his driving distance was a concern at Riveria, that won’t be a factor in the rarefied air of Mexico. He didn’t have the best outing at the Genesis, which was to be expected, but still carries some nice form with 2nd, 3rd, and 6th place finishes in his last 6 starts.

Billy Horschel

Very much a streaky player, but odds at 90/1 are too big for a guy who rolls the ball as well as Billy-Ho. After a 9th place finish in his last start at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, he carries some decent form over the border. Currently ranked 17th in strokes gained putting, he should be in for a good week.

Kevin Kisner

A man who loves a WGC, albeit more a match-play style format. Kisner has had a nice start to the season with a 4th place finish at the Sony, and a 14th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. His putting stats are a little down thus far this year, but having ranked inside the top 50 of strokes gained putting for the last 6 years, it won’t be long until he turns that around.
